This 40-minute yoga class includes movements, postures and breathing techniques to release and ease traumatic stress, as well as combat long-term stress. As always, it is important to create an environment which is free from distractions and noise that may intensify feelings of angst. This class begins seated with silent time and an opportunity for observation of the breath, body and mind. At the 6 min mark, we practice deep belly breathing pranayama. Breathing practices are instrumental in combating feelings of anxiety. At the 9 min mark, we begin a full and gentle spinal warm up. Postures toward the beginning of the yoga class focus on the chest, shoulders and chest. Practice the subtleties of balance and feeling your feet on the ground in mountain pose. Active postures include spine strengthening heart openers like sphinx, floor bow, locust and more. The second pranayama in this class is alternate nostril breathing – nadi shodhana. This is another breathing practice that calms the nervous system. Class closes with a supine twist and savasana which is partially guided.
